NOTES

Navigating the Summer-to-Fall Transition on Joe Pool Lake

Joe Pool Lake - Dallas, TX

It is late August here in Fort Worth, and the water temperatures on Joe Pool Lake are still holding steady in the mid-to-upper 80s. Despite the late summer heat, the largemouth bass are highly active if you know exactly where to look and how to adapt your presentation. We are just starting to see the very early signs of the fall transition, meaning the fish are slowly shifting their daily routines and feeding patterns.

Right now, the early morning bite is incredibly reliable. We are finding solid numbers of largemouth pushing baitfish up shallow during that first hour of daylight. A topwater walking bait or a weightless fluke thrown near the edges of visible cover has been producing aggressive strikes before the sun gets too high and drives the fish down.

Once that morning window closes, the strategy shifts. We are utilizing our forward-facing sonar to track fish moving out to deeper offshore structures and the dense standing timber that Joe Pool Lake is known for. This is where blending East Coast power fishing with West Coast finesse really pays off. Dropping a finesse drop-shot rig or a slow-dragged Carolina rig into 15 to 25 feet of water has been the key to pulling quality fish out of the deep brush piles. The bass are grouping up well right now, so once you locate one on the graph, there are usually several more willing to eat in that exact same spot.

Lake Athens is fishing similarly this week, though the healthy grass edges are providing a bit more afternoon cover for the fish. Punching a heavy jig into the thickest vegetation along the drop-offs has yielded some heavy bites over the last few days for our anglers.

The bite is strong and will only improve as the water begins to cool heading into September. Whether you are looking to learn how to read your electronics more effectively in deep water or just want to enjoy a productive morning catching Texas bass, now is a great time to get out on the lake.
